Retail sales workers
Tourism is a major driver of the economy in the Sierras. Accordingly, retail stores are a top employer in the region and are projected to have moderate growth in the coming years. While the cost of living in the Sierras is low relative to the rest of the state, retail sales jobs offer low wages that challenge the region’s residents. Considering how to expand opportunities for these workers is essential given that once-dominant timber and mining operations have slowly declined as environmental regulations take hold.
