Forestry workers
The Far North, like the Sierras, was once home to extensive logging and mining operations. The rise in environmental protections decimated these industries and left many Far North residents unemployed. Today, forestry is making somewhat of a comeback. The multi-agency effort to prevent and contain wildfires, for example, provides a portion of the region’s jobs and economic development. Total employment numbers and average salaries remain low, though, and require policymakers’ reconsideration. A robust forestry industry is essential to the health of the region and the state overall.
